Campaign Photography
The Campaign I have chosen to base my photography on is Domestic abuse/child abuse because it is a very important and moving campaign with a wide range of possibilities and messages to get across.
Campaign Photography is a style of photography that uses a photo that may or may not contain words to send out a message. This is usually used with campaigns such as racism, domestic abuse, etc.
Campaign photography - Abuse
This photograph is very powerful because it shows a married couple looking happy. But from behind the man is holding the woman's arm behind her back like a hostage. Also her arm is covered in bruises, showing that she is not only being controlled by the man, but being abused by him as well. This shows that even if someone looks happy, they could be terrified every single day, and feeling all alone because they are too scared to tell anyone what happens behind closed doors. The background is dark and dull, reflecting the mood and the message of the photo. If the background was bright and colourful it would be a lot different.

This is a very simple photograph with a very powerful message. It is saying that you wouldn't feed your child lung cancer, but you are putting it at risk of lung cancer by smoking around it. It is very simple because it has no extraordinary lighting and it is focusing on the woman's hand more than the baby.
1st Shoot
Plan
For this shoot I will:
- Carve the word 'help' into the spaces between bricks and have model stand by it, leaning on the wall.
- Take photo outside during the day.
- Focus on word more than model.
Analysis
This photograph is showing a high school student leaning against a wall with a saddened look on is face, as he is one of the many victims of bullying in schools all around the UK. There has been a hidden engraving on the wall he is leaning on of the word 'help' which is showing that you can see he needs help by looking at him, but the words wont't come out of his mouth, as he is afraid. I used Photoshop to change the lighting and saturation, etc, to give the photo a darker atmosphere. I used a small knife provided by a member of staff to calve the word between the bricks.
2nd Shoot
- For my second shoot I will use my 9 year old brother as the model.
- I will use purple paint and a small paintbrush to create bruises on face, arms, etc.
- I will do the photoshoot in my cellar to give the photographs a more dark, lonely and depressing theme.
- I will have him wear his shoes and socks, his pants, but no shirt so you can see the bruises and it looks like no one cares.
- He will be sat in the corner in a ball looking in the other direction with a painful look on his face to show fear and terror and that he's hiding from something/someone.
Analysis
I think this photoshoot was successful, the lighting and effects enhanced the bruise which I had applied using purple paint. I feel the bruises looks real. I took the photographs in the corner of my cellar because its dark and depressing, just like the theme of the photograph's. The model in the photograph is shirtless and curled up in a ball in the corner so that the bruises are more visible, and because it shows that he isn't cared for as he doesn't have the right clothing, which is just everyday essentials for other children. He is surrounded by bags and boxes filled with old toys to show that, just like him, they are unwanted and broken. He has a painful look on his face and he is looking in the opposite direction to show that he is scared and he is looking to see if someone is coming. The different filters on each photo makes the photograph's more/less powerful. For example the black and white filter makes it look a lot darker and more depressing whereas the yellowish filter makes it look a bit brighter.
3rd Shoot
Plan
For this shoot I will use an app or Photoshop to show a high school student stood against a wall. I will use the apps to clone him/her 5 times to show 5 different clones from year 7 up to year 11. Each year the student will fade away more and more until, in year 11, they are gone. This is to campaign against bullying as bullying hurts a person more than you can imagine and can lead to suicide in many cases. I will have the background moderately dark to show how the student is really feeling, but he/she will be smiling as they are putting on a 'brave face'.
Analysis
This picture is showing a high school student starting from year 7 and growing up to year 11, but the point of this is that every year he fades away just a little more than the last, until year 11 comes along and he has faded away for good. Now of course this is talking about suicide, but more importantly it is campaigning against bullying. I took 4 separate pictures of the same student doing a different pose, and used Photoshop to place them all in the same picture, lined up against a brick wall. I also used Photoshop to make them look transparent and to add text to the bottom of the photo. I found a helpline logo online which I thought would be appropriate to the campaign. I chose not to add an effect as I thought the image was powerful enough on it's own.
